Poor Oral Care in Bangor ME

Taking care of your teeth may seem simple, but there are a couple of things that you might be doing that can undermine your good intentions. Here are a few ways you may be missing the mark when it comes to good oral care.

Choosing the Wrong Toothbrush

- If you have a toothbrush that is too big, too small, or harder than it needs to be, you may not be getting enough out of your daily brushing routine. Your brush should be the right size. One that is too big or small may not be removing all of the plaque from your teeth and it could be hardening into tartar.

- You should choose a toothbrush that fits easily in the back of your mouth, but that is big enough for your teeth. Kids should use a kid-sized toothbrush.  Choosing a soft-bristled toothbrush is essential. Brushing with a toothbrush that is too hard may cause damage to your delicate gum tissue.

Using Incorrect Technique

- The goal is to clean your teeth thoroughly with your toothbrush. After you brush, run your tongue along your gums. Everything should feel smooth and free from food debris. If your tongue touches anything rough, you may need to give it another go. You should brush for at least two minutes with the bristles angled toward your gumline.

Choosing the Wrong Toothpaste

- Make sure your toothpaste says it contains fluoride. Some toothpastes do not. Fluoride helps to strengthen your enamel and prevent decay.

Postponing or Skipping Your Dental Cleaning

- You may think your teeth can wait, but tartar can build in places where you cannot reach with a toothbrush or dental floss. Areas just below your gum line can collect plaque and form tartar very quickly. The only way to remove it is by having a professional dental cleaning. It is best to stay on a regular schedule.
